Turkey Is Preparing to IT Cities

There has been an increase of usage of the information technologies in management of the urban areas and the cities and industry cities are leaving their place to IT and intelligent cities. Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation continues its work in order to make urban transformation not only physical but also administrative towards creating livable environment and brand cities and use of the city information systems in accordance with the standards specified before across the country.

Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation is collaborating with the Turkey Union of Municipalities, in order to prepare the necessary infrastructure for the execution of the activities of local governments using modern information technologies and to ensure the use of Urban Information System in a standard and common way. In this context, a protocol was signed on July 17, 2014; with the aim of making pilot applications in Elazığ, Ardahan and Talas Municipalities. Pilot application will be carried out in a joint way by Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation General Directorate of Geographic Information Systems, Turkey Union of Municipalities, İller Bankası A.Ş.. Within the pilot application standards set before by the Ministry to be tested, a prototype will be prepared based on cloud technology, inter-agency cooperation and coordination mechanisms will be established and education and awareness activities will be carried out. Urban information consists of whole information of infrastructure, environment, construction, transportation, energy, tourism, agriculture, communications, security and the information produced or used by all other sectors which is serving to the citizens. Geographic Information Systems and with its reduced form to cities Urban Information System is an important decision support tool for identifying, analyzing and resolving increasing social, economic and ecological problems caused by unplanned urbanization and rapid growth of cities and also the management of urban information, improvement of spatial planning and urban transformation processes and to speed up applications to be made. The Urban Information System has many benefits, known as; the management of information involved in local governments, ensuring coordination between units, fast servicing to the citizens, planning of construction and infrastructure services, accelerate the implementations and monitoring, revenue tracking and ensuring the increase in the revenues of the municipality.
